Ithaca College

The Latin American Studies program invites you to the third event in this semester's Latin American Studies Speakers Series.  Ronaldo Lec, Director of the Permaculture Institute of Mesoamerica, will visit campus on Tuesday, October 16.  He will give two presentations: "Myths and Realities of the Maya Calendar" at 12:10 in Textor 101 and "Food and Sustainability" at 7:00 pm in Williams 225.

Ronaldo Lec Ajcot, an Indigenous Mayan anthropologist from Guatemala, has been teaching and implementing permaculture systems throughout the world over the last 17 years, with a focus on food sovereignty for Indigenous communities in Mesoamerica. Co-founder of the Instituto Mesoamericano de Permacultura (IMAP) in Guatemala, he has delivered experiential courses and workshops on food security, the protection of biodiversity, and the establishment of seed banks at the family and community levels. He is one of the pioneers of the permaculture movement in Mesoamerica and has led the foundation of various Indigenous community organizations striving for self-determination. Lec has been an invited guest at numerous universities, including Yale University, Hiram College, the College of the Menominee Nation, and the University of Colorado.

The Ithaca College events are being cosponsored by Latin American Studies and Environmental Studies and Sciences.  Lec's visit to the Ithaca area has been sponsored and coordinated by CUSLAR (The Committee for US-Latin American Relations) and The Fingers Lake Permaculture Institute.
