Zebrafish are remarkable for both their rapid development and their robust regenerative potential.  We have been examining the retina, inner ear, and mechanosensory lateral line in these fish to try to understand what signals control the stem cell or progenitor fate necessary for development and regeneration.  In particular, Wnt signaling appears to play a central role in controlling the decision for cells to differentiate into the specialized cells of these sensory organs or to remain in a proliferative progenitor state, both during their development and following injury to the sensory cells.
