“Null Sets,” a visual work by transmedia designer and artist Evan Meany and mathematician Amy Szczepanski, won the Jury Prize in the Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival’s “Distributed Microtopia Exhibition.” Meaney will on campus as a featured new media artist as part of FLEFF 2013, exploring the theme of mobilities.

The exhibit was judged by writer and social media producer Enrico Aditjondro from EngageMedia in Indonesia. The exhibit’s curator is Dale Hudson, who teaches film and new media studies at New York University Abu Dhabi.

“Distributed microtopias run across networks like the Internet to provide and educate from remote locations on a sustainable scale, expand knowledge rather than contain it, invite participation and exploration and unhinge familiar habits of thinking,” said Hudson. “Among the many fine works considered, ‘Null Sets’ was selected for how it explored the theme of microtopias.”

“This year’s exhibition for FLEFF reflects a wide array of the ingenious ways that artist-intellectuals are imagining new ways to transform everyday realities into once-in-a-lifetime possibilities,” said Patricia Zimmermann, who, with Tom Shevory, codirects FLEFF. Both are Ithaca College faculty members.

Other works in the exhibit include Ezra Wube’s “Mela” and “Hidar,” Ali Kadhum’s “Under the Microscope,” “Sky of Dubai” by Anne Spalter, “Art Is Atrocity” by Samantha Raut, Shambhavi Kaul’s “Scene 32” and Nicole Antebi’s “Geography of Reclamation: An Essay in Three Parts.”

About the Curator

Dale Hudson teaches film and new media studies at New York University Abu Dhabi, specializing in transnational and postcolonial frameworks for understanding contemporary media. His work appears in “Afterimage,” “Cinema Journal” and other journals and anthologies. He has worked as a digital curator at FLEFF since 2007. He has also served on the preselection committee for the Abu Dhabi Film Festival.

About the Judge

Enrico Aditjondro started his journalism career in 1998 when he joined “The Maritime Workers’ Journal” in Sydney, Australia, reporting on labor issues and the shipping industry. He subsequently worked and traveled in Indonesia, where he cofounded “Para Indonesia,” one of that country’s leading bilingual social-political websites. Now based in Jakarta, he writes, produces films and maintains the Southeast Asia content for EngageMedia, a nonprofit media, technology and culture organization.

Launched in 1997, the Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival was an outreach project from the Center for the Environment at Cornell University. In 2005, the festival moved permanently to Ithaca College, where it is housed in the Office of the Provost as a program to link intellectual inquiry and debate to larger global issues.
