Join us for an interactive workshop with Dr. Andrew Smiler, Visiting Assistant Professor of Psychology at Wake Forest University.

•How do we talk - and listen - to young men about sexualities, dating, and love?

•Why and how do cultural stereotypes of men's sexualities affect the ways in which we work with and mentor young men?

•What if we imagined sexualities that are more complex and nuanced...?

Dr. Smiler will draw on his background in developmental psychology and therapy to provide an interactive workshop. Staff, student leaders, and faculty who work with and mentor men are especially encouraged to attend. The workshop is based in part on his recent book, Challenging Casanova: Beyond the Stereotype of the Promiscuous Young Male (Jossey-Bass, 2013).

The workshop will be Thursday, February 21, in Friends 309, from 12:10 to 1:00 pm.

Dr. Smiler has published in journals like Sex Roles, Journal of Men’s Studies, Substance Abuse and Misuse, and the Journal of Sex Research, among others. He has held a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Michigan (working with L. Monique Ward) and worked as a therapist with varied populations and in varied settings. He has also taught in the Psychology Department at the SUNY-Oswego.

His visit is co-sponsored by the Sociology Department, the Health Promotion & Physical Education Department, Residential Life, the Psychology Department, CAPS, the Center for LGBT Education, Outreach, and Services, and the Women's Studies Program.
