Lost and Found in Translation: Transformative Exchanges in Islamic and Western Dress

Charlotte Jirousek holds PhD and MA degrees in Applied Design from the University of Minnesota where she specialized in theory of design and color with particular emphasis on textiles, art history, and museology. In her current title as curator of the Cornell Costume and Textile Collection, she incorporates the collection in her teaching and oversees exhibition rotation and installation at the Elizabeth Schmeck Brown Gallery.  Jirousek's interests center around the history of dress and textile technologies, with particular focus on the relationship of Islamic dress and textiles to European dress, and the history of Ottoman textile industry and trade, as evidenced by surviving vestiges of traditional textile production technologies and systems.

All Handwerker Gallery events are free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 10.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m.; Thursday, 10.00 a.m. to 9.00 p.m.; and weekends, noon to 5.00 p.m.. The gallery is closed to the public on Tuesdays unless otherwise specified for an event but can accommodate group or class visits by appointment.
