ENVS Faculty Jake Brenner and John Davis (ENVS '11) Publish Paper on Transboundary Conservation IssuesContributed by Carol Hansen on 03/07/13 Jake Brenner (Assistant Professor, ENVS) and John Davis (Environmental Studies, '11) co-authored a publication in the Journal of the Southwest entitled “Transboundary Conservation Across Scales: A World-Regional Inventory and a Local Case Study from the U.S.-Mexico Border." The paper used data from the World Conservation Monitoring Center to describe a boom in protected areas that cross or meet at international boundaries. It then focused in-depth on the story of the Big Bend/Rio Bravo complex in the U.S.-Mexico border region. Their work illustrated how the global conservation agendas sometimes do not match local realities on the ground, and made a case for personal interaction among agency staff, conservationists, and local community members as an important factor determining transboundary conservation success. |
