Will you be staying in Ithaca over the summer? Then you need to learn about the local environment, natural medicines and regional food systems! ENVS will be offering three awesome courses to get you out into the local landscape!

During “Maymester,” Julia Lapp from Health Sciences and Human Performance will teach ENVS 141, Local Food and Farming. The course will look at local food-based systems as a component of the sustainability movement, and will include field trips to local farms and food-related businesses.

Jason Hamilton will teach ENVS 142, The Art and Science of Tracking – also during “Maymester.” His field-based course will combine the skills and knowledge-base of the traditional animal tracker with modern ecology, looking at natural history, clear print track identification and track aging, gait analysis, and soil movements.

In June, Jason Hamilton will teach ENVS 140, Introduction to Herbalism. This course will look at herbal medicine in the Western herbalist tradition, exploring conceptual models in modern Western medicine and in vitalist medical traditions. You’ll get out in the woods and open spaces to learn plan identification, ethical harvesting and wildcrafting techniques.

Email Jason at jhamilton@ithaca.edu for more information.
