 Human Rights Watch lawyer and activist Elise Keppler will deliver a talk on the efficacy of the International Criminal Court and the promise of global justice today April 9 from 7-9 pm at the Clark Lounge. Free and open to the public. A reception will follow.

 Elise Keppler tirelessly advocated for former Liberian president Charles Taylor’s surrender to the Special Court and Darfur’s referral to the International Criminal Court (ICC). In May 2012 Taylor was convicted of war crimes and sentenced to 50 years in prison for his part in Sierra Leone’s civil war. Taylor was the first former head of state to be convicted of war crimes by an international court since the Nuremberg trials of Nazis after World War II. Taylor calls the decision a travesty of justice and, in February 2013, appealed his conviction.
