The Center for the Study of Culture, Race, and Ethnicity (CSCRE) will host two talks by experts on Latino/a youth on Thursday, April 18. The presentations in Textor 103 will begin at 7 p.m., and they are free and open to the public.

Felipe Vargas, national youth organizer for the National Immigrant Youth Alliance, will present “#FWYH (Fight With Your Heart): Shifting Political Frames in the Undocumented Youth Movement.” A scholar, filmmaker, activist and educator, Vargas serves on the board of directors of the United We Dream Network and is the director of the Campecine Youth Academy, where he established a film festival intended to move audience members from empathy to solidarity by engaging them in participatory theatre dialogues.

Vargas will discuss the history of the undocumented youth movement and the young people he has interviewed who have chosen to engage in civil disobedience and risk deportation.

Mariela Nuñez-James, associate professor of anthropology at the University of North Texas, will present “Dreaming: Reflections on the Limits and Possibilities of a Pedagogy of Acompañamiento.” Her research focuses on formations of race and ethnicity and emerging forms of racism in educational settings, educational experiences of Latinos/as and other marginalized populations, and innovative pedagogies and research methodologies that promote educational equity.

Nuñez-James codirects the Ethnic Studies Minor and is involved in research projects that include collaboration with students, high school youth and local teachers.
