An article written by Music Education and Performance major Michael Reinemann (’13) was accepted for publication earlier this month in the Journal of Band Research, a premier collection of academic articles on musical analysis, band history, and rehearsal methodology. 

Titled “Agents of Form in the Third Movement of Ned Rorem's Sinfonia for 15 Wind Instruments,” Reinemann’s article investigates formal construction in a lesser-known 20th Century work for wind ensemble by Ned Rorem called “Sinfonia for 15 Winds and Percussion.” It will be published in the spring of 2014. 

Reinemann’s research is the result of a half-year independent study in the fall of 2013 with Peter Silberman, Assistant Professor of Music Theory, History, and Composition at the School of Music.

“Dr. Silberman pushed me to do my very best work on this project,” Reinemann said, “and I owe a great deal to his guidance. I also owe much to my theory training here at IC. I have had excellent, invested mentors and professors along the way in the department who have taken me from a freshman who couldn't tell the difference between a major and minor chord, to a published researcher as a senior.”

Silberman, a regularly published music theorist and French horn player, expressed great pride in his student’s commitment to excellence and success.

“Mike was quite dedicated to this project, displaying intelligence, insight, and a work ethic second to none,” Silberman said. “He proposed that he submit his paper to a journal and wrote a second version for submission.  I am very proud of his significant accomplishment.”

The Journal of Band Research, published at Troy University, is an official publication of The American Bandmasters Association.  It is one of the premier forums for the publication of academic articles dealing with all aspects of concert and marching bands.
