Ithaca College Baseball Places Third In NCAA Division III ChampionshipsContributed by Joe Gladziszewski on 05/28/13 The Ithaca College baseball team saw its record-setting season come to an end with a third-place finish at the NCAA Division III Baseball World Series. Ithaca's tournament run ended with a 5-4, 13-inning loss to Southern Maine at the championship tournament in Appleton, Wis. Ithaca (41-8) finished its season with a school-record 41 wins, and returned to the championship weekend for the first time since 1994. During the tournament, Ithaca faced the nation's top-ranked team Linfield twice. In the first round, Ithaca dropped an 8-6 game against Linfield, but the Bombers came back and defeated Linfield on Monday to stay alive in the double-elimination tournament. It was the only loss of the tournament for the eventual national champions from the state of Oregon. Following the opening-game loss, Ithaca stayed alive with victories over Millsaps (Miss.) by a 5-2 score, Kean (N.J.) by the count of 3-1 and Linfield (Ore.) 6-4, then fell to Southern Maine in the elimination game. Third-baseman Colby Gee, shortstop Tim Locastro and center-fielder Luke Stark were named to the All-Tournament Team. This was Ithaca's 12th trip to the Division III World Series and the Bombers finished third for the third time in program history. Ithaca won national titles in 1980 and 1988 and the program's all-time record in the Division III World Series is 24-22. |
