Last fall a project team was formed to study current practices for providing printing services in all student computer labs and the Library. It has been very clear for some time because printing has been “free” that there is considerable waste and we would like to get better control over printing services, eliminate the waste and redirect the savings to higher College priorities. The project team did outstanding work and made a series of recommendations, the first of which is in the process of being implemented for the Fall 2013 semester. All printers in student computer labs, kiosks and the Library will be tied to a new software package called GoPrint that will require users to log in using Netpass credentials to enable printing. The total usage will be recorded for each user so we can develop reliable, sound information on patterns and volume, which will help inform future steps that will be taken to reduce waste, including the possible implementation of charging a fee for printing that exceeds some base allowance per semester. However, for the 2013-14 academic year, printing will continue to be fully subsidized. The new GoPrint software is going to be pilot tested in Friends 110 during the week of July 22nd. Assuming all goes well, installation of the software in all other locations will proceed. Please plan on stopping by Friends 110 sometime next week to see how the new system will work. Contact the ITS Helpdesk at 274-1000 or helpdesk@ithaca.edu if you have any questions. Thank you.
