President Emerita Peggy R. Williams was recently elected to serve a second two-year term on the national board of directors of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), a leading voice for women and girls. Williams, whose new term began July 1, has been a member of AAUW since 1999.

Members of the board work to bolster AAUW’s mission to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research.

“AAUW is the leading national organization advocating on behalf of women and girls,” said Williams. “I look forward to the tasks that lie ahead, including working to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act and continuing to focus on such issues as sexual discrimination, sexual assault in the military, Title IX and equity in athletics. Even though it is 2013, we have much work to do to advance equity.”

Williams retired from the presidency of Ithaca College in 2008 after 11 years of service. She had previously served higher education in Vermont for 25 years, including 8 as president of Lyndon State College. She earned her doctorate in administration, planning and social policy from Harvard University, master’s degree in education from the University of Vermont and bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Toronto.

The election results for the new AAUW board were announced on June 11 at the 2013 AAUW National Convention in New Orleans. Women leaders from every state in the union attended the convention, which drew an impressive lineup of inspiring speakers and distinguished guests.

Peggy Williams's leadership on the AAUW Board has been an inspiration to
many women at Ithaca College. Thanks to her encouragement and
support, scores of students and employees have been actively working on
important and challenging issues that AAUW focuses on, such as fair pay
and electing more women to office. We appreciate her role modeling the
importance of getting involved in organizations, and congratulate her on her
re-election to AAUW!
