Ithaca College

Wendy Dann, assistant professor of directing at Ithaca College, and Sarah Pickett, assistant professor of sound design and composition at Carnegie-Mellon University, combined forces this summer to workshop a new play: The Liberator: a play with music and machinery.  Ithaca College alumni and students joined local actors, Dann and Pickett for a week in July on the IC campus, supported by an Ithaca College Creative Project Grant.

The Liberator follows the rise and fall of the friendship between abolitionists William Lloyd Garrison and Frederick Douglass.  Garrison sacrifices all to the cause and his newspaper, The Liberator. 

Dann and Pickett will continue to develop The Liberator over the next year, and will collaborate with Breaking Bread Theatre in New York, NY (Joe Calarco, IC Acting ’92 and Jen Waldman, IC Musical Theatre ’97, co-artistic directors) to produce a reading for the theatre industry in 2014.

Ithaca College students and alumni who participated in the workshop include: Evan Arbour (Acting ’15), Kelly Fairbrother (Acting ’15), Ashton Muniz (Theatre Studies ’14), Joe Pietropaolo (Acting ’14), Matt Prigge (Acting ’13), Josh Sedelmeyer (Acting ’12), Maggie Thompson (Acting ’15), and T.J. Wagner (Musical Theatre ’14).
