Discussion of Orange Is the New Black - Changing Conversations about LGBT Media Representations, at the Handwerker Gallery Sept. 19 at 4 pmContributed by Luca Maurer on 09/15/13 Is Orange the New Black? Strong, complex female characters in this popular series are changing the ways many viewers think about sexual orientation and gender identity, prison justice issues, class, race, relationships, and more. How do these intersect in fictional ways in the series as well as in real life? In what ways is this series advancing conversations about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) themes? Does enhanced visibility of LGBT characters benefit us? Hold us back? A little of both? Come contribute to a facilitated discussion of what's going right, what's going wrong, who the characters are that you love to watch, and what you'd envision as the future of LGBT media portrayals. Individuals with disabilities requiring accommodations should contact Mara Baldwin at mbaldwin@ithaca.edu or (607) 274-3548. We ask that requests for accommodations be made as soon as possible.
