2013 Distinguished Speaker in the Humanities Stephen Greenblatt to Visit November 13, 2013Contributed by Kelly Stern on 09/25/13 Mark your calendar now for the 2013 Distinguished Speaker in the Humanities lecture! Stephen Greenblatt, Cogan University Professor of the Humanities at Harvard University and renowned author and Pulitzer Prize winner, will deliver a lecture entitled "The Humanities and the Toleration of Intolerable Ideas." Why and how did the utterly unacceptable ideas reintroduced by a humanist's recovery of an ancient poem manage to survive and be transmitted during pre-Enlightenment centuries that had no concept of toleration? What role do scholars and artists play in making possible freedom of thought? Join us in Emerson Suites at 7:30 pm on Wednesday, November 13, 2013! Admission is free, and all are welcome. A question and answer period as well as a book signing will follow. Individuals with disabilities requiring accommodations should contact Kelly Stern at stern@ithaca.edu or (607) 274-1375. We ask that requests for accommodations be made as soon as possible.
