OCTOBER 21

FILM: The Voice that Broke the Silence

The Voice That Broke the Silence is a feature-length documentary about the role of community-based media in the political and social unrest that erupted in Oaxaca, Mexico in 2006. Joining us will be its director River Branch, Assistant Prof. Communication Arts at Allegheny College, PA.

NOVEMBER 1

WORKSHOP: New York State Latin American History Workshop

A semiannual workshop for scholars and students of Latin American history in which pre-circulated papers are discussed. Lunch included. The upcoming workshop will discuss papers by Luis Sierra (Binghamton University) and Raymond Craib (Cornell) on Bolivian urban history and Chilean anarchism respectively.

PRESENTATIONS: Dr. Ryan Alaniz, Cal Poly State University, San Luis Obispo , will give three separate talks on rural development and disaster relief in Central America.

·         Dr. Alaniz will also be available for meetings with interested students and faculty

NOVEMBER 11

PRESENTATION:  Steve Volk, Oberlin College "This is the Story of How We Begin to Remember: Chile, Metaphor, and Memory"

Dr. Volk was named Outstanding Baccalaureate Colleges U.S. Professor of the Year by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. He will present on how the United States sponsored coup in Chile has been remembered in the United States. Dr. Volk comes to Ithaca through a partnership with the Center for Faculty Excellence and the Department of History.
