Peter Silberman, associate professor of music theory in the School of Music, recently published an article in Gamut, the online journal of the Music Theory Society of the Mid-Atlantic.

Silberman's article, "John Harbison's Use of Music of the Past in Three Selected Compositions," investigates quotations of earlier music in the works of the distinguished American composer John Harbison (b. 1938).  Harbison, a former jazz musician, is known for blending jazz styles with more contemporary idioms, and Silberman's analyses reveal Harbison's variety of methods for doing so.  This article is the first published study of Harbison's music that goes beyond the discussion of just a single composition.
