You don't have to completely cut out candies, cookies, and cakes from your diet in order to be healthy. Moderation is the key to keeping your sweet tooth happy while staying on track with healthy eating. Here are some tips:

Read the nutrition facts!

  • Dark chocolate has antioxidants and less sugar than milk chocolate, and is often lower in saturated fat.
  • Peanut or almond M&M's have a bit of protein from the nuts.

Enjoy sweets made with whole ingredients.

  • Cookies and cakes made from scratch don't have preservatives or hydrogenated fats, and you can replace refined flour with whole-grain options.

Watch your portions!

  • Instead of eating straight from the bag, use smaller containers.

Enjoy sophisticated sweets.

  • Treats with complex flavors are more satisfying, so try something minty or even spicy-sweet!

Also, be sure to check out some healthy, delicious recipes in this month's issue of Student Health 101
