Online Open Forums on Revised Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education

Join the Center For Faculty Excellence and the Library in learning about the revised Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education
Many of you are familiar with the Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education, first adopted in 2000 by the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL). These standards – which have defined information literacy for librarians, educators, and assessment agencies – are undergoing extensive revision. A task force is working on a new approach that underscores the critical need for faculty members and librarians to collaborate to effectively address information literacy education that aligns with disciplinary content. While the exact approach is still under discussion, two new elements will be incorporated: threshold concepts and metaliteracy. These two foundational elements should provide the basis for more sustained collaborations with disciplinary faculty and create more aligned teaching and learning communities at the institutional level.
The task force co-chairs will talk about the direction the group is taking and ask the broader community to share reactions and questions. This is our opportunity to influence the future of these important standards. It would be helpful to participate together so that we can share our collective thinking and have some discussion, as a group, about possible implications for our campus.

Faculty Show and Share: Explorations with Open Learning Resources

Open Educational Resources (OER) are teaching and research resources that reside in the public domain and can be used and even modified (for free) by others. Most of these resources have been developed or made available through grant initiatives and they offer an alternative affordable option for students and faculty.

Faculty Show and Share is a series put on by the Center for Educational Technology in collaboration with the Center for Faculty Excellence. Each session features a guest faculty member who shows how they use a technology to address a teaching goal. Come hear what worked - or didn't work in a format that is informal, experimental, and fun. Discussion is encouraged and anyone is welcome regardless of their experience with technology.

Faculty Invited to Meet with NCATE Accreditation Team

From November 3-6, the All-College Teacher Education Committee (ACTEC) will be hosting a visit by the Board of Examiners from the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education, as part of the national accreditation process for Ithaca College’s teacher education programs (www.ithaca.edu/actec/). During the visit, they will meet with various stakeholders on campus and in the community. ACTEC invites any interested faculty members at IC to attend an open meeting with the Board of Examiners to talk about the teacher education programs at the College. The open meeting for faculty will be held on Tuesday, November 5, from 10:30 – 11:30am in the Center for Faculty Excellence, 316 Gannett Center. Feel free to drop in even if you only have 10 minutes for some conversation.
Humanities Faculty Social Hour

While raising profile on campus and beyond is important, fellowship is just as meaningful. In the spirit of fellowship and building community among humanities faculty at IC, the Center for Faculty Excellence is sponsoring a humanities social hour. This initial CFE-sponsored humanities event is primarily for socializing (and is very much a drop in as you are able gathering), though we can also update our colleagues about the progress we are making. The CFE is interested in sponsoring a couple humanities socials in the spring semester, perhaps one to discuss some aspect of scholarly endeavors and one to discuss a teaching and learning challenge in humanities courses.

Slowing Them Down: Pedagogies to Increase the Deep Attention of Students

Steven S. Volk, Director of the Center for Teaching Innovation and Excellence (CTIE) at Oberlin College.
The rapid spread of technology and its delivery through mobile devices has produced a lively debate as to whether this is beneficial or not to our ability to think deeply. There are those, like Nicholas Carr, who worry that Google is “making us stupid,” while others, Clay Shirky of NYU comes to mind, who note that technology always changes us, its users, but quite often for the better. Perhaps the one thing that most agree on is that technology use is getting in the way of our students’ ability to think, reflect, and focus deeply. As Carr put it, “Once I was a scuba diver in the sea of words. Now I zip along the surface like a guy on a Jet Ski.” This workshop will focus on pedagogies that we can use to slow our students down, enabling them to look closely, listen attentively, and think deeply. Its purpose is not to critique or attack their hyper-connected skills – for they will prove useful to them in the future – but to insure that these are paired with an ability to reflect and consider deeply. It is designed for faculty in all areas of the curriculum and will include some background information, hands-on activities, and discussion.
Steven S. Volk is Professor of History and Director of the Center for Teaching Innovation and Excellence (CTIE) at Oberlin College (Oberlin, Ohio), where he has taught since 1986. He holds a PhD from Columbia University (History) and specializes in Latin American history, U.S.-Latin American relations, and museum studies. In 2011 he was named U.S. Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. A Teagle Pedagogy Fellow in the Great Lakes College Association and founding director of Oberlin’s Center for Teaching and Learning, he has organized and led dozens of workshops on various aspects of teaching and learning in liberal arts colleges.

Pathways is a mental health crisis prevention and intervention training program teaching you to recognize, respond to, and refer students in distress. The workshop will introduce participants to: identifying a potential mental health crisis, initiating a conversation with someone at risk, asking directly about suicidal thoughts, and making referrals to appropriate resources.
