Internships available in marketing, video production, media tools for educators, and media literacy curriculum development.

Project Look Sharp (PLS) supports the integration of critical thinking and media literacy into the teaching of core content in multiple subject areas.  PLS develops and provides lesson plans, media materials, training, and support for educators. Visit our website for more information about Project Look Sharp, and join our team this Spring!  We host 8 to 10 internships per semester.  See below for how to apply.

Spring 2014 Internships

 New Media Tools for Media Literacy Education
Work on a number of initiatives related to new media, including:     

--Revise and expand on our New Media Tools for Teachers resource descriptions on our website
--Research and evaluate web-based models for curriculum and staff development to inform our work on a newly emerging Document Commons wiki platform
--Research, design, post and implement curriculum and design opportunities for adding web 2.0 elements to the Ithaca City School District’s new online teaching and learning portal
Experience with web and new media capabilities with an interest in their application in education preferred.

Media Literacy, Gender and K-5 Health Education
Help research media (commercials and other advertising, TV programs, films, books, magazines, Internet websites) and media literacy approaches for the development of K-5 media literacy lessons related to gender stereotyping and health education (e.g., nutrition, puberty, body image, safety, bullying).  As a K-5 Health Intern, you will work with a partner to help design, edit and format lesson plans for publication. Additionally, you may be involved in piloting, testing and evaluating media literacy lessons by observing or interviewing children in local school districts. Prior experience with elementary-aged children (ages 5-12) in an afterschool program, camp or other educational context is required.

Video Production
Use your expertise in video production to promote critical thinking about media messages for Project Look Sharp.  Create a variety of innovative short videos that promote our work and teach educators about media literacy practices. These instructional videos will be used in workshops and will be posted to our website, Vimeo, and Youtube. Experience with Final Cut Pro or equivalent is required.  

Promotion and Marketing   (4 Internships Available)
Gain skills and experience in marketing and promotion and an understanding of media literacy by working with our team of interns to implement a promotion plan for Project Look Sharp.  The internship includes the following activities:

-Concentration 1: Database and Website Marketing

·       Research and contact new and existing target groups for specific marketing
        campaigns

·       Analyze website presence and initiate outreach proposals based on research

·       Learn to use Filemaker and create scripts

·       Craft emails to media literacy and education contacts

·       Post existing educational lessons to web

·       Research, propose, and implement additional promotional activities

-Concentration 2: Design Marketing

·       Design, create, and update promotional flyers and advertisements via
        InDesign, Photoshop, or I-works

·       Analyze outreach data via Constant Contact

·       Research, propose, and implement additional promotional activities

-Concentration 3: Social Media Marketing

·       Advise on, implement, and grow our existing and future social networking
        outreach initiatives (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, etc.)

·       Help create and update “This Day in History” automated twitter database

·       Learn to use Google Analytics and present data to the PLS staff

·       Research, propose, and implement additional promotional activities

-Concentration 4: Media Outreach Marketing

·       Develop a media outreach plan and timetable for the semester

·       Design, draft, send and follow-up communications to different media outlets

·       Coordinate marketing efforts with Ithaca Media Relations for press releases

·       Learn to use Filemaker, research and add media contacts to the database

·       Develop a video & audio production plan for media outreach (e.g., for media
        outlets)

·       Help develop a long-term plan for continued media outreach
