Professor Turkon gave the opening presentation and participated in the closing panel discussion at "Towards Dynamic Small Towns: A Research Symposium" held  at the University of the Free State in South Africa

The symposium examined development and sustainability issues facing small towns in a post-apartheid South Africa.  David's talk, "The Social Underpinnings of Community Development" opened the symposium presentations, stressing the importance of understanding the social dynamics of community life, and proposed methodological perspectives from social network analysis as a means for coming to understand the complexities of community life. David also participated in the closing panel discussion on November 1, which laid out key issues, findings and plans for a future symposium to be held next year.
