The Handwerker Gallery is pleased to be opening our doors on Wednesday for the start of our next exhibition, SUMUS, featuring work by artist Benjamin Entner and IC's own collection of plaster casts on long-term loan from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. SUMUS: FIGURATIVE SCULPTURE THROUGH THE AGES For centuries artists have debated the merits of painting and sculpture: Which can more accurately mirror nature? Which can portray a subject’s true essence? Which is the nobler of the arts? Sumus explores the boundaries and interplay between two- and three-dimensional methods of making, negotiating the point at which a drawing can become form and an object can become representation. Focusing on the figure, artist Benjamin Entner has coupled plaster casts on loan to Ithaca College from the Metropolitan Museum of Art with his own drawings of contemporary individuals in postures similar to those of historical works of sculpture. By creating awkward relationships between these two separate bodies of work a dialogue is staged questioning and challenging historical perspectives of beauty, proportion, sexuality, and idealized form. *** All Handwerker Gallery events are free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 10.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m.; Thursday, 10.00 a.m. to 9.00 p.m.; and weekends, noon to 5.00 p.m.. The gallery is closed to the public on Tuesdays unless otherwise specified for an event but can accommodate group or class visits by appointment.
