Jorge Villavicencio Grossmann (School of Music) wins Fromm Music Foundation CommissionContributed by Craig Cummings on 12/03/13 Composer Jorge Grossmann (Assistant Professor, School of Music) has been awarded a commission from Harvard University’s Fromm Music Foundation in the amount of $12,000, which will fund the composition of a new work for piano and electronic sounds. The work, written for Brazilian-Canadian pianist Luciane Cardassi consists of a series of interchangeable piano pieces grouped into triptychs. The exact order of the pieces is to be decided by the performer and could vary at every performance if so desired. The electronic part is played from a laptop computer and comprises pre-recorded piano sounds. The Fromm Music Foundation, founded by the late Paul Fromm in the fifties, has been located at Harvard University since 1972. Over the course of its existence, the Fromm Foundation has commissioned over 300 new compositions and their performances, and has sponsored hundreds of new music concerts and concert series, among them Tanglewood's Festival of Contemporary Music and the Fromm Concert Series at Harvard University. Prof. Jorge Grossmann teaches composition and directs the Ithaca College Contemporary Ensemble. He is also director of the 2013-14 Ithaca College Latin American Music Festival, which encompasses more than a dozen events throughout the year [https://www.ithaca.edu/lamf] |
