Artist talk with Carla Stetson, AERIAL RECONNAISSANCE, 01/29, 6 p.m.Contributed by Mara Baldwin on 01/26/14 Please join us to learn more about faculty member Carla Stetson's exhibition of work up at the Handwerker Gallery on Wednesday, January 29, at 6.00 p.m.. Light refreshments will be available during the lecture, which will be followed by a brief q &a. Aerial Reconnaissance includes a series of drawings completed by Carla Stetson (Ithaca College, Department of Art) over the past two years that follow a cartographic impulse, exploring topics such as the atmosphere, water gyres, and polar communities bound by temperature. Wind and water currents are frequent motifs explored by Stetson in her global survey. Mountaintop removal, ocean gulf oil pollution, and underground shale fracking are among the issues that galvanize Stetson’s attention. Although somber in content, these mixed media drawings are meant to reinvigorate a sense of wholeness and a connection with large forces, drawing on an ethical agenda rather than a political one. As Stetson describes, “These works speak of a sense of expanded self, a spatial extension into the world.” Artist Bio: *** All Handwerker Gallery events are free and open to the public.
