EXHIBITION STATEMENT:
Strange Bedfellows is a nationally traveling exhibition and catalogue exploring collaborative practice in queer art making curated by San Francisco art historian Amy Cancelmo and fiscally sponsored by the Queer Cultural Center (San Francisco). This exhibition offers a multiplicity of perspective on the queer experience and a variety of strategies for collaboration including political organizing, empathy, intersubjective identity, appropriation, familial relations, and romantic partnership.
Five of the artists featured in Strange Bedfellows will visit the Ithaca College campus over the course of the exhibition. These include:
- Amos Mac, a photographer who will be speaking about his collaborations with queer artists and performers, as well as his work on the quarterly publication Original Plumbing, founded in 2009 as a publication for the documentation of and platform for trans voices, experiences, and bodies. (Funded with support from the LGBT Center)
- Chris Vargas and Greg Youmans will speak about their own video series, Falling in Love with Chris and Greg, an “odd couple”-style sitcom where Vargas and Youmans “play” themselves, addressing issues in their relationship and in the queer political arena, including gay marriage, pregnant men, and Proposition 8. (Funded with support from the Diversity Awareness Committee)
- Also visiting campus is artist/writer/curator Sean Fader whose photographic series, I Want to Put You On, depicts Fader’s likeness digitally merged with bodies of his various subjects.
- Tara Mateik will travel to Ithaca to present a performance workshop as part of his project Friends of Dorothy, a body of work deconstructing the myths of home and identity through investigating The Wizard of Oz and The Wiz. Collaborating with impersonators of queer icons Diana Ross and Judy Garland, Mateik’s performances play with personification and identification of heroine Dorothy Gale. During his visit Mateik will recruit volunteers from the community to participate in the production of a new collaborative performance project based on Frank L. Baum’s Oz sequel, The Army of Revolt. Gallery hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 10.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m.; Thursday, 10.00 a.m. to 9.00 p.m.; and weekends, noon to 5.00 p.m.. The gallery is closed to the public on Tuesdays unless otherwise specified for an event but can accommodate group or class visits by appointment.
