The Sustainability Café on Monday, April 28 will feature Dr. David Turkon presenting "Sustainability and Community Development: Lessons from Southern Africa". The Café will be held in Center for Natural Sciences Room 112 at 4:00PM, in conjunction with the Environmental Seminar. The Spring 2014 Sustainability Café/Environmental Seminar series is focused on the concept of Campus Sustainability: Hiding in Plain Sight.

Professor David Turkon teaches in anthropology and environmental studies, where he stresses how to apply anthropological theories and methods to help mitigate social problems. His primary research has been in southern Africa, primarily in a rural, mountainous area in Lesotho where he carried out various research projects. One project worked to establish culturally specific intervention strategies targeting food insecurity through non-intensive agriculture. A second project sought to create innovative, community based approaches that promote education, behavioral modification, good nutrition and sustainable poverty reduction as ways to combat the spread of HIV, prolong the lives of infected individuals, and to ease the burden on families caring for an afflicted member.

“Teachable edibles” – local, organic and/or seasonal snacks – for the Spring 2014 Sustainability Café series are being sponsored by Ithaca College Dining Services whose motto is “Sustainability – Healthy – Fresh.” Please bring your reusable mug and fill up at the nearest drinking fountain or provide your own beverage of choice.
