Sam Brunk, a renowned Zapata scholar and author of The Posthumous Career of Emiliano Zapata: Myth, Memory, and Mexico’s Twentieth Century and Emiliano Zapata: Revolution and Betrayal in Mexico, will present Remembering Emiliano Zapata: A Brief Visual Tour of Mexico’s “Revolutionary” Century, on Monday, March 24 at 7:00 p.m. in Textor 103.

This talk is a look at how visual representations of Mexican Revolutionary Emiliano Zapata have helped forge a modern myth over the past century.  Examining that visual record—from an iconic photograph of Zapata with Pancho Villa in Mexico City and the painting of renowned muralist Diego Rivera to more recent commemorative statuary--allows us to explore the ways in which the government that emerged from the revolutionary process in Mexico sought to derive legitimacy from the image of the hero. It also demonstrates how people have sometimes contested the government’s legitimacy by developing their own, oppositional, representations of Zapata’s image.
