Contemporary artist, photographer, writer, and publisher Amos Mac will be visiting Ithaca College to talk about his work currently featured in the exhibition Strange Bedfellows on Thursday, March 27th at 6:00pm in the Handwerker Gallery.

Inspired by queer publications and the absence of positive exposure for the trans-male community, Mac partnered with Rocco Kayiatos in 2009 to co-found Original Plumbing, a groundbreaking quarterly magazine dedicated to documenting the culture of transgender men. Mac provides the magazine with playful yet politically engaging images and portraits that deal with the concerns of the transgender experience. Mac also continues to rupture the notions of gender by collaborating on a photographic periodical called Translady Fanzine. He was named one of Huffington Post’s “Transgender Artists You Should Know” in 2012 and “Artist of the Year” by the Museum of Transgender History and Art in 2013.

Mac’s work has been featured in group shows at venues including: The San Francisco Public Library, Munch Gallery, Splatterpool, and the Leslie + Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art. His images have appeared in select magazines such as The New York Times,  VOGUE Italia, BUTT Magazine, OUT, and Interview.

All Handwerker Gallery events are free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 10.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m.; Thursday, 10.00 a.m. to 9.00 p.m.; and weekends, noon to 5.00 p.m.. The gallery is closed to the public on Tuesdays unless otherwise specified for an event but can accommodate group or class visits by appointment.
