Beethoven Festival (April 14-17) brings internationally recognized artists and entrepreneurs to all IC StudentsContributed by Nicholas DiEugenio on 04/08/14
The festival, "Inspired by Beethoven: Becoming a 21st Century Musician," will feature guest violinist Aki Sauliere, cellist Raphael Bell, pianist Mimi Solomon, and IC violin professor Nicholas DiEugenio hosting four seminars, open to all IC students, and will culminate in a concert on Thursday, April 17, at 7 pm in Hockett Family Recital Hall, also featuring current Ithaca College music students.
Inspired by the example of Beethoven, one of the first musicians to understand his own society's music market and to operate as a free agent within that market, becoming a 21st century musician requires skills of perception, innovation in programming, entrepreneurship, networking, and writing skills which go beyond the musical skills honed and refined within the practice room. All four of the seminars will address the distinctly unique situation of the 21st century musician, yet will also be presented through the lens of Beethoven's own music-business innovations, which were groundbreaking in his own time.
The concert program will feature Beethoven's Op. 130 string quartet, performed by IC students Laura Sciavolino, Sonsoles Llodra, Stephen Gorgone, and Pan Yan. The program will also feature the Lied and Walz movements from Korngold's Suite, Op. 23, for two violins, cello, and piano left hand, which was commissioned by Paul Wittgenstein and, like Beethoven's Op. 130, also features many small movements that are gathered together as unlikely "parts of a world." The Trio La Loingtaine will also open the program with one of Beethoven's Op. 1 trios, which were works he presented upon arriving as a new, young artist on the music scene in Vienna in the 1790s.
