Submitted on behalf of Terri Stewart, Director for Public Safety and Emergency Management Today, an estimated one in five women is sexually assaulted in college.* The month of April is designated Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) in the United States. The goal of SAAM is to raise public awareness about sexual violence in its many forms and to educate communities and individuals on how to prevent sexual violence. At Ithaca College, the College Advisory Committee on Campus Security & Campus Life has a similar charge, year round. This governed committee is comprised of faculty, staff and students who promote safety and security through review of campus policy and procedure and assessment of community education and outreach (for improvement). One key area for raised awareness is sexual assault prevention, education and resources; specifically, reporting incidents of sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence and stalking; to include information on assisting survivors during investigations; referring complaints to appropriate authorities; counseling survivors; and, responding to inquiries from concerned persons. We want to hear from you. If you have ideas for working together to raise awareness and help prevent sexual assault, or if you are a student who is interested in partnering with this campus advisory committee, we urge you to email the committee leadership at the following: Terri Stewart tastewart@ithaca.edu and Linda Koenig lkoenig@ithaca.edu *For more information on sexual assault and its many forms, visit the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office on Violence against Women at ovw.usdoj.gov. If you or someone you know has been sexually assaulted please take a few minutes to review the vast amount of information and resources that the College makes available to the campus community as outlined in the Annual Security & Fire Safety Report, published by the Office of Public Safety and Emergency Management. |
