Ithaca College Theatre will present the classic play, “The Crucible,” by Arthur Miller. Performances of this production will take place in Hoerner Theatre at 8 p.m. on April 22, 24, 25 and 26. A 2 p.m. matinee will be offered on April 26 and 27.

Miller wrote “The Crucible” in 1953. The story is based on the events of late 17th century Salem, Mass., when those accused of dabbling in witchcraft were tried and punished for their alleged crimes. Miller wrote the play as an allegory to the 1950’s “McCarthyism,” during which time the U.S. Congress held hearings questioning Americans accused of holding Communist views.

When “The Crucible” first premiered on Broadway, Miller was unsure of how reviewers would respond to the production because of the controversial subject matter. He needn’t have worried; The New York Times proclaimed “The Crucible” “A powerful play [in a] driving performance.” The play went on to win the TONY ® award for Best Play in 1953.

Emily Naylor ’14, assistant director of Ithaca College’s production, says, “It is our hope that audience members will be engaged in the lives of these Puritans who actually lived through these times whereby innocent people were hung just because they had an enemy in the town.”

Director Norm Johnson leads Ithaca College Theatre’s production. The design of “The Crucible” was created by Andrew Hostler ’14 (scenic), Paul Radassao ’15 (lighting), Maxine Etchison ’15 (costumes), and Kevin Aloi ’15 (sound). Marisa Andrews ’14 is the stage manager and Alexander Pitt ’14 is the technical director.
