Marella Feltrin-Morris (Modern Languages and Literatures) recently published an article entitled "Massimo Bontempelli's Siepe a nordovest: A Theatrical Construction of Magical Realism" in L'Anello che non tiene: Journal of Modern Italian Literature 24.1-2.

The article examines the ways in which Italian writer Massimo Bontempelli (1878-1960), thanks to whom the term realismo magico was introduced into Italy in 1927, explores the possibilities and limits of theatricality in his play, Siepe a nordovest (Hedge Facing the North-West, 1919). In it, Bontempelli populates the stage with humans, marionettes, and puppets. Through the puppets' bubbly dialogue, the marionettes' passionate interaction, and the humans' ennui, Bontempelli's tormented attitude towards the fictional creation is revealed.
