CSCRE Offers Online Summer Session Course of Race in U.S. MediaContributed by Paula Ioanide on 05/02/14 Center for the Study of Culture, Race and Ethnicity assistant professor Paula Ioanide will offer "Watching Race in American Media" as an online course during the May Summer Session (May 13-23). Course fulfills DIVERSITY designation; General Education requirements 1: Self & Society and GE h: Historical Perspective, Humanities, Liberal Arts. To enroll, search course number CSCR 26100 for Summer 2014 term on Homerconnect. COURSE DESCRIPTION: Explores how representations of racial and ethnic identities in U.S. film, television, and music influence the construction of political, racial, and gender identities nationally. Investigates how cultural representations of race, ethnicity, and gender are central to the development of U.S. mass culture and consumerism, nationalism, citizenship, and social movements. Particular attention is given to the role of black and Latino/a culture and music in developing strategies of resistance to oppression. Prerequisites: Sophomore standing. 3 credits.
