Andrew Becker Selected for Phi Kappa Phi National Fellowship AwardContributed by Tammy Sritecha on 05/22/14 The Ithaca College chapter of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi is pleased and proud to announce that its 2014 Fellowship nominee, Andrew Becker, was selected as a Phi Kappa Phi Fellow and will receive an award in the amount of $5,000. These awards are extremely competitive and to be selected as a Fellow is a distinct honor. Andrew, who graduated this May with a B.S. in Biochemistry, plans to continue study at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania next year. In Fall 2014 Andrew was selected as the recipient of the Phi Kappa Phi John Bernard Presidential Scholar Award. At Ithaca College, Andrew was the Director of Internal Communications for the Senior Class Cabinet, President of the Pre-Medical Society, President of the Diabetes Awareness Club, and a Group Leader for Ithaca College’s Relay for Life, which raises money for the American Cancer Society. He also served as a Teaching Assistant at Ithaca College for chemistry courses and as an Academic Enrichment Services tutor for chemistry courses. The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi currently awards fifty-one Fellowships of $5,000 each and six at $15,000 each to members entering the first year of graduate or professional study. Each active Phi Kappa Phi chapter may select only one candidate from among its local applicants to compete for the Society-wide awards. Criteria used in the selection process include undergraduate academics, leadership and service both on the campus and in the community, graduate prospects, the student’s personal statement, and faculty and other recommendations. Ithaca College has been fortunate to have an excellent track record in having fellowships awarded to its nominee. Past Ithaca College winners of Fellowships are: Ann Stewart (Music and Mathematics, 1994), Pablo Cora (Music, 1995), Teresa Lemery (Physical Therapy, 1997), Dheeraj Verma (Mathematics and Finance, 1999), Bridget Reynolds (Psychology, 2002) Rebecca Hammontree (Music, 2004), Dominic DiOrio (Music, 2006), Joseph Livingston (Chemistry, 2007), Kaitlyn Alcorn (Music, 2010) and Kaylee Underkofler (Biochemistry, 2012). We are delighted to add Andrew Becker to our chapter’s list of recipients!
