After over 30 years of service to the College in several roles Marian will become the first Director of the Wells Institute of Sustainability and the Environment at Wells College in Aurora, NY beginning June 3.

Marian has coordinated and chronicled the Ithaca College’s broad-based sustainability initiative since 2004. As a member of the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment campus committee that developed the College’s climate action plan, she was responsible for the adoption of the Climate Action Plan by the Board of Trustees in October of 2009. Off-campus, she represented the College Sustainability Initiative to numerous partners and she served on the boards of Sustainable Tompkins and Ithaca Carshare, and is on the advisory board for Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Environment Program committee.

A quiet and exceptionally effective organizer, she has an incredible capacity for going the extra mile-and-half to see a project through to completion. Her involvements on campus have included co-chairing the United Way campaign and singing with the Ithaca Voices. Her boundless energy makes it hard to keep up with her! We will all miss seeing Marian, coat tails flying as she sped from classrooms, to meeting rooms to practice rooms, on and off campus, giving tirelessly of herself in every endeavor.

We all wish her the best in her new position and we know that she will continue her dedication to Sustainability by bringing that expertise and energy to Wells College and Cayuga County.

She will be sorely missed in the faculty-staff choir IC voICes (and many other
areas, I am sure!). Best of luck, Marian!

Marian has been a most effective educator on campus, and equally so off campus, about sustainability, and she worked hard to get Ithaca College to take a leadership role among higher education institutions. In her nurturing, supportive way she has helped people throughout Tompkins County understand that "sustainability" means nothing odd or exotic, just the simple fact that if we don't *sustain* and keep healthy our institutions, communities, finances, resources, environment, and selves, they will sicken and collapse. Marian will bring so much valuable expertise and knowledge, as well as her level-headed, supportive personality to Wells College. Wells College's gain is Ithaca College's loss. Best of luck in your new ventures, Marian! And thank you for all you've done for IC.

Good for you Marian! I wish you the very best at Wells and I'm sure IC will miss
its "green queen" and all that you have done to advance the cause of
sustainability at the College.

Don't forget to check out Dories from time to time while in Aurora. You may run
into Nancy and I there!

Wait for it . . . . . . .

Irish blessing (that we sing for such occasions):

May the road rise up to meet you,
may the wind be ever at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face
and the rain fall softly on your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the hollow of his hand.

And a la Carol Burnett:

I'm so glad we had this time together,
Just to have a laugh, or sing a song.
Seems we just get started and before you know it
Comes the time we have to say, "So long".

It has been a pleasure singing with you in voICes, Marian, and I will miss seeing you around campus. I wish you the best in your new position at Wells.

I echo Chris H's sentiments (you can hear a strong soprano presence on the Irish Blessing!), and wish you all the best. Having known you long enough to have worked with you in two different roles, I know that Wells will be getting an extremely dedicated, knowledgeable, energetic and passionate director for their new initiative...how lucky they are! What they don't know (yet) is that they also will be getting a person with the best sense of humor and pun finesse I have ever met!!! Good luck, Marian, and thank you for all you have done for Ithaca! I'll miss you!

Marian,

I've been honored to be aquainted with you during my past 5 years at Ithaca Dining Services. Your hard work, knowledge, and open mind has inspired me to learn so much more about sustainability and resource stewardship than I ever before realized possible. Your collaboration with the Ithaca Dining Services Energy Initiative Committee has been instumental in bringing a team of persons together with such varied responsibilities and backgrounds, and effectively guiding the group to listen and learn from each other, and produce impact and results together.

Thank you so much for being a colleague and supporter. I hope that we will continue to cross paths in the future.

Best Wishes,
Paul Warrender

I am really sorry to lose Marian, but wish her all the best at Wells. They are
exceedingly fortunate to get such a capable administrator, and such a warm
individual. Best of luck, Marian, and thank you so much for your wonderful years
of service. You will be missed by those of us who had the good fortune to work
with you over the years.

Marion, we go a long ways back, at least to 1989 when Anthropology and Art History were moved from Muller Three to Gannett One and you helped us furnish our new digs with - what else? - recycled office furniture (obviously a precursor of things and roles to come!). You were such a can-do person then - and even more spectacularly in your most recent position guiding the college's sustainability initiative.

So, congratulations to you! And what a coup for Wells College. Many thanks. Go well.

Garry Thomas

P.S. I very much appreciated your coming to my retirement party in Susan Allen-Gil's back yard in 2004 - did I tell you? - and would gladly return the favor all these years later.

What a loss for us all! I was watching the penultimate episode of COSMOS last night that discussed the urgency of addressing climate change. You were our champion of sustainability, an instructor of a way living that could counteract this major problem. Every summer at the Information Fair you greeted our incoming freshmen with information about alternative forms of transportation, water usage, and ways to live sustainably in this world. These are critical skills for the future of our planet. You have made a huge impact here -- and many friends. It was sad to learn of your departure. I raise my refillable mug to you! Sincerely, Cathy
