Ithaca College Gerontology Institute with the Finger Lakes Geriatric Education Center presents Falls Prevention: Multifactorial Considerations on Thursday, September 25, from 2:00-4:30 p.m. at the Country Inn and Suites, 1100 Danby Road. Part 1: Overview of Falls as a Complex Geriatric Problem

Part 2: Environmental and Contextual Factors Related to Falls

Presenter: Michele Karnes, EdD, MS, OTR, Assistant Professor of Occupational Therapy, D'Youville College

Part 1 of this workshop will provide a comprehensive review of the complex problem of falls in older adults. Participants will review research supporting specific assessments and strategies for identifying and reducing fall risk factors in older community-dwelling adults. Part 2 will examine environmental assessments and strategies directed toward changing behaviors related to home safety/falls prevention. Dr. Karnes will highlight Internet sites that serve as resources for home safety and adaptation as well as discuss the proper use of assistive technology and adaptive equipment.
