Ithaca College

Ithaca College has had a very successful programmatic partnership with Longview, a retirement community located on Danby Road, for the past 15 years. There are a number of opportunities for members of the Ithaca College Community to become involved at Longview.

• The Ithaca College Faculty/Staff Lecture Series at Longview:  Now Recruiting for Speakers!
  

Part of this relationship has involved an ongoing Faculty & Staff Lecture Series.  Lectures are scheduled on Wednesday evenings from 7:00-8:00 in the Longview auditorium.

Volunteer speakers are now being recruited for September 24th, October 1st or October 22nd; November 5th; and December 3rd.  An appreciative audience is guaranteed!  Contact Chris Pogorzala, the IC/LV Coordinator if you would be interested in doing a presentation at Longview.  (274-1051, pogorzal@ithaca.edu)

Examples of past presentations include:

Women's Humor in Qatar: Cultural Perceptions of Women and Women’s Voice by Mary Ann Rishel (Emerita Professor of Writing); Adrienne Rich: A Celebration: Poetry Reading organized by Katharyn Howd Machan (Writing); The Cold War in Books and in Memory by Michael Smith (History); Conversations with a “21st Century Mystic”: A Lecture Based on Fieldwork in the Ashram of a Female Guru in India by Angela Rudert (Philosophy & Religion); and Trinacria: A Tale of Bourbon Sicily: A reading by Antonio DiRenzo (Writing).

• Course Related Projects at Longview 

Faculty members can involve their students at Longview through course related, and/or service learning projects.  Intergenerational discussion groups, tours of Longview, recreational and social activities planned by students, and student presentations or performances held at Longview are all possibilities. Chris Pogorzala will work with faculty and students to identify options and to facilitate scheduling, promotion of programs, and recruitment of Longview participants. 

• The Longview/Ithaca College Shuttle

On days that classes are in session there is a shuttle that provides transportation between Longview and the College in the morning with stops at the Center for Health Sciences and Textor.  This shuttle is available to members of both the Longview and Ithaca College Communities.  The shuttle schedule for Fall 2014 will be posted by Tuesday 8/26 on the Gerontology Institute website at: https://www.ithaca.edu/aging/longview/. More information on the shuttle, along with the fall schedule, will be posted on a separate Intercom announcement by that date.
