Dr. Sandra Steingraber, Distinguished Scholar in Residence in the Department of Environmental Studies and Science in the School of Humanities and Sciences, Steingraber has dedicated her career to exploring the links between public health and the environment with a special focus on chemical contamination and climate change. Dr. Steingraber will be presenting “Neutrality Advocacy, and Morality in a Time of Climate Emergency: The Role of Science in the Climate Change Movement.” This talk will including research findings from her new book in progress, as well dispatches from Steingraber’s ongoing work as a science advisor to Americans Against Fracking, co-founder of Concerned Health Professionals of New York, and recruiter for the People’s Climate March in New York City on September 21.

A biologist as well as a cancer survivor herself, Steingraber came to prominence with the 1997 book “Living Downstream: An Ecologist’s Personal Investigation of Cancer and the Environment, which was released in a second edition in 2010, along with an award-winning film adaptation. The book she researched, wrote and published while here at Ithaca College, “Raising Elijah: Protecting Children in an Age of Environmental Crisis,” focuses on the twin threats of climate change and chemical trespass on child development. This summer, as a member of Concerned Health Professionals of New York, she helped compile and release a Compendium of Findings on the Harms and Risks of Fracking, which has garnered world-wide press attention.

Last June, Steingraber keynoted the European Commission’s annual environmental conference in Brussels. She has testified before the President’s Cancer Panel and the European Parliament and participated in briefings for members of Congress and United Nations delegates. Her honors include the Heinz Award, the Rachel Carson Leadership Award, the Hero Award from the Breast Cancer Fund; and the Environmental Health Champion Award from Physicians for Social Responsibility, Los Angeles.

The IC Faculty Colloquium, launched in 2012, is a monthly event designed to provide a forum for faculty to share with one another their scholarly and creative work. This is a chance for people across department and school lines to learn more about the exciting pursuits of their colleagues and to engage with one another as members of a common learning community.

The Colloquium will take place from 5:00p.m.-6:30p.m. in Klingenstein Lounge of the Campus Center, with the first half-hour being a social time. We will enjoy wine, appetizers, an outstanding presentation, and excellent conversation.
