Four current or former Ithaca College student members of Phi Kappa Phi were recently selected to receive awards from the Phi Kappa Phi national organization.

Tiffany Lu (M.M., Performance in Conducting) - Love of Learning Grant
William Pomerantz (B.S., Chemistry, 2002) - Love of Learning Grant
Lauren Mazzo (B.A., Journalism) - Study Abroad Grant
Andrew Becker (B.S., Biochemistry, 2014) - National Fellowship Award

Tiffany Lu (M.M-Performance in Conducting) was awarded a PKP “Love of Learning” grant, which enabled Tiffany to attend a conducting masterclass held in Vicenza, Italy last April. The class was offered under the auspices of the European Conducting Academy and was directed by Lior Shambadal (Principal conductor of the Berlin Sinfonietta) and Romolo Gessi, (Principal Guest Conductor of the Philharmonia Veneta). In addition, Tiffany took advantage of her time overseas interacting with fellow musicians from the eight different countries she visited during the 2014 spring term.

William Pomerantz (B.S. - Chemistry, IC 2002) was also awarded a “Love of Learning” grant. Since leaving Ithaca College, Pomerantz was a Fulbright Fellow in the Department of Chemistry at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, ETH, Zürich, Switzerland, earned a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and served as a N1H NRSA Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Michigan.  He is currently Assistant Professor of Chemistry at the University of Minnesota.

Lauren Mazzo (B.A. - Journalism) was awarded a PKP “Study Abroad Grant”, which she used to help fund travel to Valencia, Spain where she took advantage of an opportunity to develop her journalism skills by attending the Narrative Journalism Workshop.  During her month in Spain, Lauren made connections with American journalism students and professors, as well as those from the host country and other parts of Europe.  Lauren’s blog of her experience can be found at  http://miveranovalenciano.wordpress.com

Andrew Becker (B.S. in Biochemistry, IC 2014) was selected to receive one of the PKP fellowships last May. Annually, the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi awards fifty-one Fellowships of $5,000 each and six at $15,000 each to members entering the first year of graduate or professional study. Andrew is currently pursuing studies at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. While at Ithaca College, Andrew was also selected to receive one of IC chapter’s Presidential Scholar Awards.
