In an effort to partner with the campus community we so proudly serve, we want to take a moment to provide faculty and staff with information regarding planned fire and evacuation drills. As required by the New York State Fire Code, Ithaca College’s Environmental Health and Safety personnel have once again begun conducting fire and evacuation drills for all campus owned and occupied buildings. The fire code is very specific as to when drills are held, and how many drills are required each year; a simple explanation of the code requirement is that all residential life buildings must have four drills per year while all academic or business occupancies must have three.
EH&S will attempt to avoid conducting drills during study weeks, exam weeks etc., and every effort will be made to conduct the drills during reasonable weather. The academic and business buildings are currently scheduled to have their first round of drills take place during the next three weeks. Based on weather, the second round will be conducted during the last two weeks of October and possibly into the first week of November. The third and final round for the academic year will be conducted in mid-April of 2015.
As is always the case, you are required to exit a building in a safe and expedited manner using the closest means of egress any time the fire alarm system is activated, and should then gather at your building’s established meeting spot to await further instructions. You should not attempt to re-enter the building until told to do so by the Fire Department or Public Safety/EHS staff.
If you have any questions the day of the drill do not hesitate to ask the EH&S staff conducting the drill. Your assistance in the drill is needed, so that by working together we can maintain fire code compliance and help to create a safe environment for our staff, Faculty and Students.
Thank you
