The Roy H. Park School of Communications will participate in National News Engagement Day on Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2014.

National News Engagement Day is an initiative of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) and is designed to encourage people of all ages to explore news and raise awareness about the importance of being informed.

Events Include:

Panel: Local Media and the Importance of Audience Engagement

Former NBC News National Correspondent, MSNBC Host, and anchor at WTOP all news radio in Washington, D.C.

Documentary Screening and Talkback: Silenced

Only 11 people have ever been charged under the Espionage Act of 1917 — 8 during the Obama administration. James Spione’s documentary Silenced (2014; 103 min.) tells the story of two of them, and examines why whistleblowers, and the journalists who bring their stories to light, are essential to a healthy democracy. A Q&A will follow with Park Center for Independent Media director, associate professor of journalism, and media critic Jeff Cohen. Light refreshments will be provided.
