Singing has the same health benefits as yoga, study finds…join IC voICes and see for yourself!Contributed by Anne Woodard on 10/01/14 The science doesn’t lie: singing really is better for your health than yoga. And, in the words of Ella Fitzgerald, “the only thing better than singing – is more singing.” Scientists have shown that not only does singing in a choir make you feel good; it’s got health benefits, too. Researchers at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, found that choristers’ heartbeats synchronize when they sing together, bringing about a calming effect that is as beneficial to our health as yoga (Sarah Rainey, The Daily Telegraph, National Post Wire Services | July 10, 2013) Singing has been shown to boost our immune system, reduce stress levels and, according to a report published in the Journal of Music Therapy in 2004, help patients cope with chronic pain. A joint study by Harvard and Yale Universities in 2008 went one step further, claiming that choral singing in a Connecticut town had increased residents’ life expectancy. We, the members of the faculty-staff chorus IC voICes, want to extend an opportunity to help you relieve daily stress by joining us every Monday from 4-5 in 1207 (on the first floor) of the School of Music! Many of you probably sang in high school and college and might not realize how much you miss it! There is NO audition and the ability to read music is a perk, but not necessary. We have an amazing membership that’s open to any faculty or staff at IC. We’re ready to start rehearsals to prepare for the holiday season and would LOVE to have new members!
