Dr. Alex Moore is a Senior Research Associate in Cornell University’s Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, and is director of Cornell’s Field Program in Earth and Environmental Systems in the Hawaiian Islands. She has taught geology and environmental sciences for many years in the US and overseas, and for over 15 years has conducted field work with undergraduate students in North and South America, Europe, Asia, and Oceania.

She currently heads up a semester-long experiential field program in geology and cultural ecology on the Big Island of Hawai'i. The Hawaiian Islands are an outstanding natural laboratory where her students explore a variety of ecosystems, examine their development over time, witness human influences on plant and animal communities, and experience geologic processes such as active volcanism and seismicity. Extensive field work gives program students hands-on experience as they probe the interaction between earth, ocean, atmosphere, and biosphere.

At Monday’s seminar her topic will be How to Build a Forest: Cultural Ecology in the Hawai’ian Islands; looking at how extensive logging and over-grazing by cattle and other livestock have destroyed much of Hawai’i’s tropical rainforest habitat, and a look at reforestation efforts to protect the islands’ incredible diversity. Please join us at 3:45 in CNS 112 to meet Dr. Moore and enjoy sustainable snacks supplied by Sodexo, and then at 4:00 for the presentation!
