Please join me in congratulating Kris Monroe on accepting the position of Senior Consultant with Blue Canopy Group headquartered in Reston, VA. His last day working at Ithaca College will be Friday, October 31st.

Kris, our ITS Information Security Officer (ISO), has been with the college since December 2007, starting first as a security consultant. In October 2008 he was hired full time as Network Security Engineer, then appointed Acting Information Security Officer in August 2009, and finally promoted to Information Security Officer in March 2010.

Kris has worked closely with network services staff, systems administrators, and others over the past six years to ensure the security of our systems by contributing secure architecture, design and engineering strategies via the multi-year Network and Security re-Architecture (NSrA) project, the ITS project management process, and other security-specific projects.

He has been actively involved with EDUCAUSE security groups, a SANS Institute EDU advisory group, the Information Systems Security Association (ISSA), and ISACA. These communities have been valuable to him throughout his career at Ithaca College.

His contributions during his tenure are many, but he is most proud of:

  • His mentoring of a number of ITS Information Security student workers; two of which were hired right after graduation by the SANS Institute – a company that specializes in information security and cyber security training
  • Representing Ithaca College as co-chair of the Higher Education Information Security Council (HEISC) Awareness and Training Working Group and member of the HEISC Leadership Team
  • Developing a collaborative relationship with the campus and credibility for Information Security Office by working with campus members at all levels – going from an office of ‘no’ to an office of ‘how’
  • Establishing the ITS vulnerability management forum responsible for IT infrastructure risk assessment and vulnerability management

Kris, we thank you for your many contributions to Ithaca College and ITS. We wish you the very best in your future endeavors!
