Their lives are upended when a handsome lectore brings Tolstoy’s “Anna Karenina” into the family business. “Anna in the Tropics” contains adult themes and situations; parental discretion is advised. “In the morning the lectores read from newspaper articles, in the afternoon they read from the proletarian press, and the last part of the day was saved for the sweet delicacy of the novel,” playwright Cruz explained about the role of the lectore in Cuban cottage industries. “Besides providing literary escape, the lectores were instrumental in facilitating awareness and mobilizing change in the workplace and the larger political arena…cigar workers were able to escape the monotony of manual labor through literary reveries.” The production is directed by Wendy Dann, assistant professor in the Department of Theatre Arts. The student-led production team includes scenic designer R. W. Westbrooke ’16, costume designer Emmanuel Alexander Garcia ’15, lighting designer Ryan McSherry ’16 and sound designer Josh Samuels ’15. The technical director is Dan Wendel ’15 and the stage manager is Samantha Salloway ’15. A nationally recognized professional theatre-training program, the Department of Theatre Arts attracts students from across the globe. Throughout the school year, undergraduate students present all aspects of theatre in a professional model. Visit www.ithaca.edu/mainstagefor further information.
