In today’s world, data is highly accessible and immediate. While we hail knowledge – what do we know about the history of our own family and why is it that vital to our existence - identity? Following a successful tour in the States in more than 50 college campuses and community events, Shir, an experienced public speaker, daughter of a protagonist of the acclaimed documentary film “Shadow in Baghdad” Linda Menuhin Abdul Aziz, is coming to Ithaca College. As a descendant of a Jewish refugee, Shir’s personal family background serves as a study case to examine how we portray our identity and why we have to dig into our past and learn about our families to build our own identity. The presentation is tailored specifically to student audience. It is performed in a highly engaging manner to propel participants to examine their stand about the subject. For over 2,500 years Jewish in Arab lands thrived. From 1948-1970 nearly a million Jews from these countries were forced from their homes becoming the “Forgotten Refugees”. Their story has been left out of political, academic, and social discourse for the past 60 years. Yet most of the refugees themselves never shared their past with their descendants and never portrayed themselves as such. Shir talks about the revelation of building her own identity based on the different narratives in society and the role our past plays in building our present and future.
