On Tuesday, Dec. 9 at 7 p.m., Maya Schenwar will give a talk based on her new book, “Locked Down, Locked Out: Why Prison Doesn’t Work and How We Can Do Better.”

The talk, followed by a Q&A and book signing, will be held in School of Business Room 111 (the Carl Sgrecci Lecture Hall).

Using true stories of families—including her own—whose loved ones are incarcerated, Schenwar argues compellingly that our broken punishment system needs a major overhaul. She then offers examples of effective alternatives to incarceration that are being implemented in cities nationwide.

Michelle Alexander, author of the acclaimed book The New Jim Crow, calls the book “highly persuasive and difficult to put down. I turned the last page feeling nothing less than inspired.”

Schenwar will also discuss her work as editor of one of the nation’s most influential independent media outlets, TruthOut.org, which accepts no advertising or corporate backing.

Individuals with disabilities who require accommodation, please contact Brandy Hawley, bhawley@ithaca.edu or 607-274-3590.

RSVP at the calendar listing, here (optional).
