As the action of the play jumps back and forth in time, Kelly makes new discoveries about who her late husband really was. Past traumas come back to haunt the living and the dead take on new life in this drama, set in a post 9/11 world. An American playwright recognized both here and abroad, Christopher Shinn has been nominated for and won theatre’s most prestigious awards in recent years, including the Obie Award in playwriting (2005) and the Pulitzer Prize (2008, finalist). In a "Los Angeles Times" article in 2013, Shinn described the environment of "Dying City": “We're living in a time where people think of themselves as victims, whether they're oppressed or the oppressor, whether they're doing violence or violence is being done to them… This is what compels me and keeps me going: I'm so sympathetic to the way trauma shapes people, but as a dramatist I'm also interested in questions of agency and responsibility." The cast of "Dying City" includes Justin Albinder ’18, Lydia Flock ’18, Noah Ruff ’17, and Brooke Shilling ’17. The artistic staff includes technical director Kevin Aloi ’15, assistant director Ilyssa Ernsteen ‘17, costume and scenic designer Lena Forman ’15, lighting designer Scott Halstead ’16, sound designer Evan Hawkins ’16, and stage manager David Kanter ’15.
