In December, immediately after the end of the fall semester, Jeffery Meyer, Director of Orchestras, traveled to Southeast Asia to conduct the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra in a concert of works by Steven Stucky, Brahms and Stravinsky.

Meyer first appeared with the PPO in 2008, both as a pianist and conductor, and returned in 2009 for masterclasses and a concert with the Filharmonika (now the ABS-CBN Symphony Orchestra of Manila.) The PPO is the country’s leading orchestra and is widely regarded as one of the top musical ensembles in the Asia-Pacific region. While in Manila, Meyer also worked with the Orchestra of the Orchestra of the Filipino Youth, an El Sistema-inspired organization working to assist children in need through the discipline and community of making music in the orchestral setting.

In January, Meyer traveled to Thailand for his sixth appearance with the Thailand Philharmonic and his debut in the newly completed Prince Mahidol Hall. The performance included works by Debussy, Copland and Thai composer Narong Pranchareon.  Additionally he recorded Pranchareon’s debut album comprised of seven works for orchestra, all written in the last ten years. The recording is to be the TPO’s first international commercial recording and will be released on Albany Records in 2015.
